World Asthma Day: 3rd May 2016

One in ten people in Australia has asthma. It affects people of all ages.

Asthma is a long-term lung condition. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers, causing a ‘flare-up’. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airway squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow and there is more mucus. These things make it harder to breathe.

World Asthma Day is an annual event organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.

New Zealand has world’s worst rate for invasive melanomas, overtaking Australia

New Zealand has overtaken Australia as the world leader in invasive melanoma rates, Brisbane researchers have discovered.
A study from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute has found the rates of Australia’s invasive melanoma — which had increased since the 1980s — are declining and predicted to keep falling over the next 15 years.

Invasive melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, capable of spreading to other parts of the body.
The study showed New Zealand now had the highest rates of the skin cancer in the world, with the latest figures showing about 50 cases per 100,000 people

Key points:

  • New Zealand now has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with about 50 cases per 100,000 people
  • Australia’s rates are declining
  • However, the overall number of invasive melanomas diagnosed in Australia is still rising
